BMTA Grandfathering-In Existing Small Vessel Operators Until Dec. 20
The Barbados Maritime Transport Administration (BMTA), under the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, is currently grandfathering-in existing operators under a new licensing regime. It will allow them to lawfully operate Barbados-registered vessels of 150 GT and below, in accordance with the Act.
The Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024, entered into force via publication in the Official Gazette on July 26, 2024.
Existing operators of Barbados-registered vessels of 150 GT and below are encouraged to visit the Fourth Floor, Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, One Barbados Place, Warrens, St. Michael, to be grandfathered-in.
Existing operators are identified as those who:
- previously held Speedboat Driver’s licences;
- hold international qualifications from the Royal Yachting Association,
- American Sailing Association or other internationally recognised vessel operations qualifications;
- have vessels currently registered on the Domestic Shipping Register; or
- those who do not fall into categories (a), (b) or (c), but have years of experience operating at sea, as verified by a reference or testimonial from a local vessel organisation, a shipping company, or the vessel owner or captain.
The 2024 grandfathering-in activities conclude on Friday, December 20, 2024. The BMTA will subsequently notify operators about the 2025 grandfathering-in period.
With regard to new entrants to the small vessel shipping industry, under the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024, they are required to apply for a Barbados Small Vessels Learners Permit in the category corresponding to the small vessel intended for future operation.
The Barbados Maritime Transport Administration thanks persons for their cooperation and understanding.
