Extension Of Grandfathering-In Period For Documented Small Vessel Operators

The Barbados Maritime Transport Administration (BMTA), a department under the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, has extended the period for grandfathering-in activities related to the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024.

The grandfathering-in process, which commenced on June 11, 2025, for documented persons, was originally scheduled to conclude on October 31, 2025, but will now end on December 19, 2025.

The BMTA will continue to grandfathering-in documented individuals at the Ministry, located on the 4th and 5th Floors, One Barbados Place, Warrens, St. Michael, for individuals who:

  • previously held a Speedboat Driver’s Licence immediately before July 26, 2024, the commencement of the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024; and
  • previously held international boating qualifications immediately before the July 26, 2024, commencement of the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Act, 2024.

The BMTA thanks persons for their understanding and cooperation.
